Self Assessment Essay

11/30/21

When I first started this class, I had no idea what to expect. When you hear English composition, you automatically think of writing and reading, which is exactly what I did. However, the subjects I expected it to cover were altogether different. The focus of this course is on a single concept: language. Now, when you think of language, you’re probably thinking of the way we communicate. But I’ve never gone into great detail about what language is. How crucial it is to us individually. I’ve never given it any attention before, and writing 20+ pages about it has completely transformed my perspective on language.

The assignment that helped my build-up to the major ones was something that has helped me grow my writing, which is one of my aims. For instance, all of the worksheets are based on our readings. Analyzing the text of June Jordan or Amy Tan in depth has helped me comprehend key aspects of language, the various varieties of it, and how they affect English speakers.

Both readings have their statement; in one of the major essays, the rhetorical analysis essay, you evaluate June Jordan’s text; in the research essay, I get to write my text. All of the prior texts and assignments honed my linguistic skills, allowing me to apply them in my essay. For example, in my research essay, I used the information I gleaned from that text to back up my thesis. “Amy Tan’s book “Mother Tongue” is a great illustration of this, in which she explores how she speaks different English to her mother than she does to her colleagues or other academic audiences,” according to Javier Pujols’ “The Impact of Environments on Our Language Developments.” This is demonstrated in this section of my essay.

I learned how to correctly develop a thesis that can be backed with evidence during this course, particularly how to obtain effective and strong evidence. Breaking down huge topics and illustrating how they relate to my thesis are two methods I’ve utilized. This will aid my audience’s comprehension of my topic and writing as a whole.

The WLLN assignment not only taught me about language but also about myself. This is because many occurrences connected to my language are finally being recognized.

Aside from that, rhetorical circumstances have influenced my studying and writing abilities. They have aided me in a variety of ways; for example, knowing them has aided me in analyzing and comprehending articles, essays, and a variety of other readings. Knowing them and understanding how they operate has also aided me in implementing various rhetorical situations in my works.

Now one of the things that this assignment has helped me the most is in recognizing the role of language attitudes and standards in empowering, oppressing, and hierarchizing languages and their users, and being open to communicating across different languages and cultures. In addition, writing about my language experience assisted me in realizing how much language unlocks. Being able to communicate means that you can understand and even celebrate other cultures, it also took me back to June Jordan’s essay, because white English was claimed as “standard English” it became superior to other types of English becoming “normal” and that is why Jennifer was scared to speak because she speaks English that isn’t white making her feel abnormal.

In rhetorical analysis is one of the assignments that has helped me become closer to my goal in analyzing a text. I learned how to better read complex content, such as this one, as a result of this writing assignment. It taught me how to decipher text and understand what is being stated. Previously, I would read an entire page and had no idea what it was about. Nonetheless, because I’m not just reading, but also evaluating and comprehending what’s being stated, this task assisted me in gathering information.

Due to these practices, I will be alert for any rhetorical strategies used in a text, and having the ability to break it down and analyze is something that this course has helped me achieve.

Now doing research for this essay and seeing my goals for this class has helped me

become closer to achieving them. Now moving forward in life, there will be a time where I would have to do research again on a different topic. But this gives me a heads up and a startup to doing proper research that will be useful and effective. Due to the new options, I have been enlightened. June Jordan’s use of an anecdote and many other strategies has helped me develop strategies for reading, drafting, collaborating, revising, and editing.

In each major assignment, I had to use citations and I think I showed growth in my text as well as citations. It is necessary for many bodies of text, which is why I made it one of my goals and priorities for my writing road of development. Change and experiments are what make growth better, which is what occurred in all of these assignments.

Acknowledging the role of language attitudes and standards in empowering, oppressing, and hierarchizing languages and their users, and be open to communicating across different languages and cultures

These are the concepts I have been able to understand, the knowledge I have gathered, the different points of view regarding a topic. All because of this course. I have become a better writer, and reader, overall a big improvement in my academic career.
